Asthma Test: The Five Most Common Asthma Tests

Types of medical asthma tests:

There is no such thing as a single asthma test that is 100% effective. Both the causes of asthma and the forms of this condition are too varied to allow for that. Instead, there are several asthma tests that are usually performed to determine if the condition the patient suffers from is truly asthma or not. While it is extremely improbable that anyone would have to take all the tests below, any potential asthmatic will probably be asked to take at least two of them.

1. The Peak Expiratory Flow Chart asthma test:

This asthma test usually takes only a few moments over a week. The PEFR chart is created to check the existence (or non-existence) of airflow limitations.

2. The Histamine Bronchial Provocation test:

This asthma test is used to check for hyper-responsiveness in airways, a common trait in asthma. It is commonly used for those people whose most visible symptom is coughing.

3. The Corticosteroids' Trial asthma test:

If taking corticosteriods brings an overall improvement of patient's condition, the chances are that he or she suffers from asthma. This test is one of the most commonly used (only PEFR and spirometry are more popular), mostly because of its simplicity.

4. The blood and sputum test:

Most people who suffer from asthma have increased level of eosinophils in the blood. This is the only asthma test that requires a laboratory which carefully checks for the presence of excession eosinophils in the possible asthma sufferer.

5. The Spirometry asthma test:

This is one of the most trustworthy asthma tests. A spirometer checks the maximum amount of air the patient can exhale. If it's lower than it should be, that is one of the surest signs of asthma. The test is, however, unadvised for children of five years old and below – their lungs might be still over- or underdeveloped, making the readings much less exact than in case of older people.

If you or a family member suspects that asthma is a real possibility, participating in two of these asthma tests will help to more clearly define the existence - or not - of asthma. Your doctor will recommend which ones to take.
